A Kayak Excursion

It’s been a great start to the summer! All of the new girls arrived today and we are so excited to see them!

One of my favorite things that happened this week was going on the senior’s kayaking excursion on Thursday. This was a new excursion that camp has never tried before. So we loaded up all of the younger seniors and a couple of ultimates and headed out to an access point to meet our guide. Everyone got to be in their own single kayak. We learned very quickly that kayaking is a lot different from the canoeing we are used too. The beginning of the river had a few strong currents that gave us some trouble; we even had a few girls fall out. Everyone was fine because counselor Lindy was a huge success in helping everyone back into their kayaks safely.

Unfortunately, we experienced some bad weather that made us pull over and delay our trip. However, the summer shower did not last long, and we were soon on our way again. The rest of the trip was filled with lots of easy coasting, sunshine, and fun! Overall we kayaked 2 miles and had a blast. When we arrived at our pick up location, the touring company had a cookout with hotdogs and chips waiting for us. They even gave us all our own kayak charm to remember the experience.

It’s always a lot of fun to get to leave camp on an excursion. It was especially fun being able to try something new like kayaking. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned at camp is that it never hurts to try something new and that rain can’t ruin anything when you have the right attitude. I am especially excited to welcome all of our new girls today and hopefully be able to share the same kind of experiences with them in the coming weeks!
