Mother-Daughter weekend at Riva-Lake is quickly becoming a family favorite tradition. My girls and I just enjoyed our second year, and we cannot wait to go again!

As a mother, I love to unplug and spend time with my girls. I enjoy getting away from our busy lives, and the girls love to select the fun activities we get to do. For once, I don’t have to do all the planning!  I let them take the lead, and I get the opportunity to see camp the way they do.  The weekend is filled with excitement and laughter. The cool fresh air and a quiet walk in the woods is always good for the soul.

Each year at camp has felt a little different, but they have been special in their own way.  Last year, it was all new. An exciting adventure we had not tried before. My oldest was very cautious and chose activities that were familiar and comfortable. We bonded over lots of art, horseback riding and hot cocoa. I tried to push the boundaries with archery and woodslore, but they were not a hit. She knew what she liked, so why try something new? We still had fun meeting new friends and learning the Riva-Lake way of life.

Coming back this year, she was ready for adventure! While horseback riding was still a favorite, she loved the night games and woodslore too. I can only attribute this change to her two weeks at camp this past summer. She came home with so much confidence, and we are not the only ones who have noticed. We’ve had several family, friends and teachers notice the behavioral changes too.

I got to witness her confidence in action while horseback riding on our weekend together. She was so excited to show me how much she had learned at camp. Then Cat let her ride her horse solo without a lead. I could see the pure joy and pride in her every move as she mounted her horse. After several trips around the arena, her horse decided he did not want to follow the others. Immediately, my heart began to beat a little faster and I must admit I panicked a little on the inside. Then, I was astounded when she calmly took charge and corrected him. Without even a hint of fear, she got her horse back on track and continued her ride. I saw my daughter in a new light at that very moment. This camp is something special. They empower young girls to grow and be the best versions of themselves. I know she is making life-long memories and friends. She is already so excited to camp next summer.
